After Week 1 I had been eager to see what other things I would be learning in this class. Something that I learned that I feel I will greatly benefit from, would be how to break up a poem and truly understand what is being said. I think it's very important to have your own meaning and understanding of a poem and see how it connects to what others had taken from the reading. Learning how to break up the poem was beneficial because not only did I get a deeper understanding of it, but I also got to explore different views of the poem by talking to my peers, and also got a few different meanings by rereading this myself. Another beneficial thing I learned in week 2 had been learning, and understanding what a connotation was. At first, I really had a problem grasping what this had meant and how to use this to break down a poem, but now I have a much better understanding of what it is and how it may be relevant to breaking down my poem. Personally, I struggled using the TP-CASTT to break down the poem. It was difficult for me to fully understand what was being asked for each part. After discussing with my peers, I feel as if I understand much better and now I can see this being a great way for me to have a deeper understanding of what I am reading. To sum up this week, I think learning how to use and incorporate the TP-CASTT I will have a much better understanding of what I am reading, and instead of just pointing out the obvious, I am going much deeper into my thoughts and also being more creative with my responses. I think this will help me a lot more the next time, than it had the first since I had some trouble understanding what was being asked.

Week 1: Stepping Out of the Comfort ZoneComing into this class I was very scared since it is an AP Class. After learning about how my teacher wants us to learn I feel a lot more comfortable. I like that we can choose a book for our author study and our teacher seems willing to help. Throughout week one, I learned what a reading rate was and how important it is to know your own reading rate. I always felt like I had to keep up with the majority of the class which made me blow through all of my reading. I also learned what an author study was. I also learned that it is important to find a book you enjoy that way you can really focus and relate to the book. Reading does not have a specific rate to which you need to read and I like that our teacher understands that people have to set their own pace. I think I am most excited to be more open to new ideas and genres throughout the year. I also like that we get a chunk of books to choose from. It puts me out of my comfort zone but it also gives me the option to choose what I am reading. I have already started my book and it is something I would not have chose on my own so I am glad I am being put out of my comfort zone and trying a new genre. Already in the first week, I realize how important reading is and how much of an impact it can have on your life and your path.
