As a child, Megan hated to read. She would never find a book that caught her interest and if she did, it did not last long. But as she grew older and was capable of more mentally, she began to really enjoy reading during her free time. After seeing her older brother and grandma make trips to the library regularly, Megan wanted to go along with them. So she got her own library card and participated in the summer reading programs along with her brother. She would start a book one day and finish within the next few days. It became one of her favorite things to do. She would always ask her brother to borrow his books from his large collection and would bug her mom to make trips to the library. In middle school Megan's love for reading became minimal. She mainly struggled because she wouldn't focus on the books she read and would breeze through them to do her book reports. It wasn't enjoyable as it had been before. As Megan entered high school she once again became interested in reading on her free time. She would read over the summer, during school hours, and when she got home. As a reader, Megan would start a book and was not able to put it down. It also helped spark interest in what she would like to pursue in her future, such as her job. Throughout the summer Megan had read few books. Such as, "Just Friends", "Milk and Honey", and "The Cabin". Throughout her previous school year she had read a good amount of books, one of her favorites being "The Glass Castle" or "A Child Called It". She has had the luck of her dad being a teacher and her brother being a bookworm, so she has been exposed to many books, having roughly about 50-60 books in her home. Reading also brought out her ability to write. Reading often encouraged her to be more creative and more open to other genres and ideas. Her interest in authors and genres grew as she became more interested in reading. Megan became interested in many romance, mystery, and fictional books. She mainly enjoyed reading books, not listening to anyone else read, audio books, or magazines. In the past year or so, Megan has increasingly read more books and enjoyed to read during her free time.
Megan was just as much of a writer, as she was a reader. She had learned how to write throughout her school years and improved by the help of her older brother. She would write in order to put her creative ideas out and express herself. In order to write well she would ask her brother ways to improve and also continuously write stories. She would write stories on her own time and also enjoy the writing portions during school. It helped her by connecting her ability to read to her ability to write. Not only did it become a hobby but helped her grow as a person, expand her vocabulary, and inspired her to be more creative. It became something to do when she had any free time. It was a way to express herself and also make up her own ideas. When Megan had a lot on her mind, she would go to her computer to write stories. She enjoyed writing mysteries and would sit at her computer often to do so. As she got older, Megan wrote less and read more. Writing became less of a hobby and more of a chore, as to reading which became an escape. Although she did not enjoy writing on her free time, she enjoyed writing in school. Megan had no problem writing essays and notes in class, it was just no longer something she loved. She enjoyed to write when it was needed, but it was no longer a hobby. As she got older, she became more confident in her reading, and less in her writing. As a result she no longer enjoys to write in her free time and would prefer to read. |
